A five course banquet fit for Santa himself

Over the past week I have been extremely busy planning the perfect Christmas bonanza for a VIP client from the Academy of Medical Sciences. I was given full creative control to transform the venue from an elegant townhouse into a winter wonderland. Being a magpie for anything sparkly and enchanting, this event was right up my alley.

The client decided to use our reception room for an intimate dinner of 17 guests, with pre dinner drinks in our Ann Rylands room and Terrace (yes terrace!). As we all know, London had been a little nippy of late; however our brave guests huddled under glowing patio heaters wrapped in lamb’s wool blankets, sipping on the finest of champagne.

After braving the city’s chill, the guests gathered inside to enjoy a selection of pre-dinner canapés lovingly created by our Harbour & Jones head chef Will Carvalho. With a distinctive festive feel, the canapés chosen from our Christmas menu included Norfolk Bronze turkey with sweetcorn rosti, Cornish sea bass on Chorizo risotto cake, and sun dried tomato and rosemary fritters with basil pesto.

After a good old catch up around the Christmas tree the guests were welcomed into the dining room to feast on a 5 course banquet fit for Santa himself. Starting with a traditional salmon starter, Chef Will’s Chalk farm salmon three ways with a horseradish crème Fraîche ensured this wasn’t just your average smoked salmon. Moving on to the mains, the braised speyside feather blade of beef in red wine with pumpkin ravioli and baby leeks warmed everyone’s cockles whilst they washed its down with glugs of Maison de la Pays, Old Vines Carignon 2011. Pudding played homage to great British creations with a classic Cambridge burnt cream served with chestnuts and chocolate delice. Like any great dinner party pudding was followed by cheese boards from Neil’s Cheese Yard and glasses of vintage port.

Surrounded by the classic sounds of Frank Sinatra, guests celebrated the festive season deep into the night, with the finale of coffee and Will’s famous homemade chocolate truffle petit fours long after the clock struck midnight.

La Perla Spring/ Summer 2013 collection showcase

Coming from a fashion event background my eyes lit up when an email from La Perla popped up in my inbox.

They were on the scout for a grand Sicilian ballroom that could play host to their spring/summer 2013 collection preview.

After brainstorming with on-site caterer Harbour & Jones to find the perfect Sicilian refreshment, the Council Chamber was perfectly transformed by the La Perla team from heritage London to Sicilian chic.

With thanks to Big Wednesday PR for the official press release below:

La Perla, the leading creator of luxurious and fashionable lingerie, nightwear, swimwear and loungewear for women and men, used 41 Portland Place, the home of the Academy of Medical Sciences, to host its 2013 spring/summer collection preview. The intimate event saw 50 VIP buyers and press in attendance.

The venue’s elegant John Newsom-Davis Council Chamber which boasts ornate plaster ceilings, antique mirrors, paintings and a marble fireplace housed the showroom and reception area. Mannequins dressed in the latest collection were displayed around the room in standing and seated poses alongside floral displays and period furniture. Sample pieces were presented on clothes rails.

Guests enjoyed Virgin Victorian Mojitos: a mix of fresh pressed apple, mint and sugar and Sicilian lemonade provided by in house caterers Harbour & Jones. Presented as part of the display were multi-coloured meringues and cupcake confections that buyers could devour whilst surveying the latest in haute lingerie.

Suppliers of the event included mannequins from Adel Rootstein, floral displays by Rebel Rebel, sweet treats by Beas of Bloomsbury, skirt props for the mannequins from Lora Avedian and furniture from Farley and Granger Hertz.

New skills...

Over the last few weeks I have turned my hand to one or two marketing tasks. Having tackled the tricky reports, budgets and sales and marketing plans I have now moved on to the creative stuff.

Creative is my middle name therefore I am in my element.

Seeing as 41 Portland Place’s Terrace has been revitalised with a blanket of luxurious lawn, The outside sanctuary now provides the perfect entertaining space amongst the rooftops of Marylebone. Having had this ‘facelift’ I thought it is only appropriate our little terrace has its very own photo shoot.

I would like to say a huge thank you to Pitfield London for providing the furniture for this event. You can view their website here

Enjoy!

Anyone for a picnic?

Harbour & Jones 'Gastro Tour'

There was a time, whilst embarking upon the search for the perfect career, I thought I would never find a job I enjoy. Luckily for me my first glimpse of the events industry has been lovingly tailored by Harbour & Jones.

From the start, Harbour & Jones have ensured that I have had the correct training and enough opportunities to really bond with my colleagues both within my office and within the entire company. Part of this induction involved Harbour & Jones sending their trusty new employees (ranging from chefs to directors and waiters to events co-ordinators) on a magical tour around London’s best gastro eateries.

After a brisk walk from Marylebone tube station on the hunt for the specified meeting place, I eventually found a group of people huddled around a chocolate shop window. After 10 minutes or so of small talk and introductions we were welcomed into our first shop ‘Rococo’ by our host Jenny linford.

Rococo is a small, chocolate boutique founded by Chantal Coady in 1983, As we settled into the shop, the friendly staff gave us a talk on the different types of cocoa bean and allowed us to sample a whole range of chocolates. My personal favourite was the salted milk chocolate although the handmade truffles melted in my mouth. You can find the contact details for Rococo here.

With a packed itinerary to get though we briskly walked to our second venue ‘La Fromagerie’.
La Fromagerie was founded by Patricia Michelson and is London’s most exciting cheese shop. The handpicked cheeses from all around Britain and Europe are preserved in their very own walk-in refrigerator, with busy shop assistants buzzing about spreading their knowledge.

Cheese being a huge weakness of mine, I was in utter heaven as I was asked to select a cheese for the group to taste. I chose a Welsh goat’s cheese which was beautifully dusted with toasted rosemary.

Cheese can be incredibly expensive in large supermarkets however, by shopping at smaller retailers you can make a huge saving. This little block only cost me £2.00.You can find the contact details for La Fromagerie here.

As if we were back in the day appropriately next door to the cheese shop was the butchers.

The Ginger Pig owned by Tim Wilson showcases meat from his very own Yorkshire farm. The shop offers a range of longhorn cattle beef, pork from rare breed pigs and lamb from his free range sheep.
As you enter the shop you are somewhat taken back by the traditional approach to the butchers techniques with carcass’s hanging from the back room and slabs of meat being chopped by large meat cleavers however it was extremely refreshing to see meat being served in such a way opposed to the usual vacuum pack.

The Ginger Pig also serves a range of in house pies, pates and terrines. We sampled two of their homemade sausage rolls- which I must say were the highlight of my day. Absolutely mouth watering! You can find the contact details for The Ginger Pig here.

Next we moved on to Soho and to the home of some of London’s oldest food shops. First on our list was ‘Lina stores’, A veteran Italian deli that has recently been rewarded with a facelift - despite the new look, Lina stores still retains its gentle pace of service and provides Londoners with a little taste of Italy. Here we sampled Italy’s finest parmesan cheese.

Lina stores is a great little find in the centre of Soho that I will 100% be adding to my list of delis. You can find the contact details for Lina stores here.

Just opposite we wondered into Princi - a glamorous Italian bakery come cafe, producing high quality sweet and savoury baked goods from brioche and biscotti to pizza and focaccia. Being a huge olive fan I plumped for the olive bread and Oh my was it a great choice. The BEST olive bread I have ever tasted- I purchased 3 to take home with me.  You can find the contact details for Princi here.

With a tummy full of olive bread we sluggishly strolled to our final gastro eatery on the tour before lunch. (Yes lunch!)

I  Camisa is a tiny little Italian deli but don’t let the size deceive you. I Camisait is one of London’s most popular delis with a huge following of loyal customers. Having only lived in London for 8 months even I had heard the hype around this little gem.
The olives are a personal favourite of mine but be sure to sample the Parma ham.
You can find the contact details for I Camisa here.

Although full and tired from exploring London’s best independent retailers next we wondered to St Pauls cathedral to sample Harbour & Jones offerings in the ‘St Pauls restaurant’

For starters we sampled a range from all of the starters on offer from the menu. My personal favourite was the French onion soup which was served in tall shot glasses the perfect size for a tasting platter.

For main I plumped for the chunky lamb burger which was served on rustic wooden boards accompanied by tiny frying baskets for the chunky homemade chips. The lamb was seasoned to perfection and even though extremely full from my day of ‘snacking’ I couldn’t bear to leave a crumb.

You can book a table at St Pauls here.

The afternoon was filled with fine wine, story swapping from our various venues and foodie discussions from what we had sampled throughout the day.

All in all another fabulous treat from Harbour & Jones.

The perks of the job

On Friday the 41 Portland Place team and I were very generously treated to an evening out to celebrate the financial success of the year.

We chose to host our evening of celebrations at Vista @ The Trafalgar, Where we hired a private area nestled cosily in the corner of their roof top terrace.

Despite the drizzle we enjoyed beautiful views across Trafalgar square and the roof tops leading to the London eye and river Thames.

Adamant we were going to enjoy the views across London we took shelter under our umbrellas as we gorged on some delicious canapés and olives whilst sipping on some very fine Californian wine.

As the clouds retreated into the night the roof top terrace came alive with mood lighting and ‘cheesy chart’ music. To those who know me- this was right up my street!

It was lovely to mingle with the team at Harbour & Jones as well as spend time with my colleagues from 41 Portland Place away from the office environment.

I cant wait to see what we have instore for the Chrismas party!
